Opportunity

This handsome colonnaded Georgian tenement in the heart of the New Town was built in the 1820s as apartments, artist studios and shops, but latterly used by distillers Hill Thompson & Co as their HQ offices and whisky showroom.

Challenge

Whiteburn purchased the building after it had lain empty for several years and quickly obtained change of use and listed buildings consent. We sensitively refurbished the upper floors as offices, restoring some rare Victorian murals in the process.

The ground floor, with its fabulous west facing patio, was let to Cafe Rouge, the basement to PoNaNa nightclub and the two offices to local marketing businesses in less than a year. On the way we sold off a double garage to the rear, but retained a foothold in the nearby Silvermills carpark.

We eventually disposed of the investment, following first rent reviews - the timing made it one of Whiteburn’s most rewarding refurbishments.
