The Opportunity

Following a fire that swept through a group of tenements from South Bridge to the Cowgate in late 2002, previously in 8 separate ownerships Whiteburn negotiated a complex legal transaction to wrap the whole site into one single holding in 2006.

The Challenge

To breathe some new life into this somewhat disconnected corner of Edinburgh’s Old Town, our aim was to obtain a commercially viable planning consent, working closely with the City of Edinburgh Council's planning department and consulting with the appropriate heritage bodies and the local community.

We obtained a planning and listed building consent in July 2009 for a hotel-led mixed use development, including bars, restaurants, retail, festival venue and business centre. One of the planning committee members commented that "this could be a listed building of the future!"

Whiteburn are currently in negotiations with operators and funders, with a view to commencing the development shortly.
