Caerlee Mill Team goes back to school in Innerleithen

The team from Caerlee Mill were special guests at St Ronan’s Primary School in Innerleithen recently where they took the opportunity to remind pupils about the potential dangers of construction sites. This talk was timely as Whiteburn have their own live construction site in the town, and the school has imminent extension works being planned .

As well as learning more about the health and safety measures on-site and the chance to try on some of the safety gear the site operatives need to wear, Whiteburn’s Roger Bainbridge gave the pupils a history lesson about Caerlee Mill. The school’s own staff also recounted their working at the Mill and its specialism of intarsia knitting giving the pupils the opportunity to learn about the mill’s former contribution to the town.

It’s all about being part of being involved in all aspects of community life as Eve McCurrich, Managing Director for Whiteburn explains: “Our key objective is to bring this historic site in the heart of the town of Innerleithen back to life, and to create a great place for people to live. But we’re also mindful that we want to be more than just a developer, and that we want to really be part of the local Innerleithen community by providing a link between the history of the Caerlee Mill site and its future. Visiting St Ronan’s Primary School was an ideal opportunity for us to do that, while also making sure that our message to never play near a construction site was shared in a positive, constructive and fun way.”

Keith Belleville, Headteacher at St Ronan’s Primary School in Innerleithen adds: “Our children really enjoyed the informative presentation by the Caerlee Mill team. Quite apart from reminding the children about the important role that Caerlee Mill used to play in the town, and learning about how the site will be transformed, it was refreshing to see the importance the team placed on sharing their message about staying safe near a construction site. When you consider that some of our children will pass the development site on their walk to school, it’s important that they are aware of the key things that will help keep them safe.”

The redevelopment of the grounds of the former Caerlee Mill in Innerleithen has already reached a key milestone, with confirmation that over 75% of its first phase of new build homes and flats have been reserved.

The vision for the site, in the heart of this thriving Borders town, is to deliver a range of two, three and four bedroom houses and cottage flats, which are designed to reflect the spirit of the former mill site, as well as the heritage of the town structure. Planning consent was granted in August 2018 for 44 new build houses and flats.

In conjunction with the launch of the new-build housing for sale, Whiteburn continues to explore economically-viable solutions for the B- listed Brodie’s Mill building which dates back to 1778, and are in discussions with potential end users.
