Scottish Housing Day 2023
Scottish Housing Day 2023
Today celebrates Scottish Housing Day 2023.
We’re happy to share how our Managing Director, Eve McCurrich started her route into the housing sector and help raise awareness of the impact of the various roles within our industry.
“My first introduction to house building was my parents moving us into a static caravan whilst we renovated a fairly derelict cottage. This turned into what is still their wonderful home. I was 12 years old at the time and I guess they are responsible for my choice of career.
Close to where I grew up, a new nuclear power station was being constructed. Following a summer temporary job the contractor, Laing Civil Engineering, offered to sponsor me through university to study Quantity Surveying. I studied at university and worked for Laing for eight years, obtaining my chartered quantity surveyor qualification during that time. I worked on many large construction projects from nuclear power stations to metro systems and a subterranean sewage treatment plant in a dock in Swansea. My choice of career meant I worked and lived in many different places in the United Kingdom. My family joked I had an address book page to myself.
When I moved to Scotland, I started work with the house builder George Wimpey. At the time I knew very little about house building, but I soon came to realise I was working in a fantastic construction family and delivering homes which were making a difference to the communities of many parts of East Scotland.
A downturn in the economy took me to Dubai where I managed the design, fabrication and construction of a climbing wall & ariel assault course in the roof of a mall. This included trips to Bulgaria on my own to negotiate a subcontract ….a definite life experience.
Today I lead the business at Whiteburn. The company is growing and as well as building houses, we are building a great team and a wider network of professional colleagues.
We deliver homes that we have designed and built. We also hold the hands of our customers through the home buying experience, as for each person it is an individual journey and their largest financial investment. The rewarding part of a very long process for us is that customers choose to buy their home from us.
As to a career associated with home building, we need planners, lawyers, financiers, architects, engineers, surveyors, tradespeople, manufacturers, digital marketers, sales people…..and many more… it’s a profession of professionals.
I’ve worked and continue to work with some brilliant people and some amazing teams. I love that what we do makes a difference to the fabric of a society and peoples lives.
Everyone needs a place to call home.”
