Three Awards: A Momentous Day at Whiteburn

Last Friday was a bit of a momentous day for the team at Whiteburn. As you know, we’re a small team – currently 15 of us – and we won 3 major awards…

Home Builder of the Year – SME

Development of the Year – Small – for our first phase at Viewforth, Kirkcaldy

People, Place, Planet

We’re passionate about what we do, the quality of the places we create, and the homes we build for people. We’re equally passionate about the people we work with. We aim to work collaboratively to provide the best working conditions for our site teams. We also want to ensure that everyone goes home safely and is proud of what they have built.

Buying a home is probably the single biggest financial investment someone will make. Our team invests its time, commitment and passion to ensure the homes we design and build, together with the places we create, are all worthy of everyone’s investment. What we all do is hard. In truth, we think it’s getting harder. But recognition from our peers in the industry makes us believe the Whiteburn team is getting things right.

Eve McCurrich, Whiteburn’s Managing Director: “It is fantastic that our small team was awarded three awards at this year’s Homes for Scotland Awards – Home Builder of the Year (SME); Development of the Year – Small – for the first phase of 20 homes at our Viewforth development, and the joint winner of  People, Place Planet.  The Homes for Scotland awards are incredible industry accolades judged by our peers. These awards bring together our entire industry to showcase the work of a myriad of professions to deliver Scotland’s new homes. It’s an opportunity for our industry to celebrate the positive contribution that we make to both Scottish society and the economy through placing the importance of new housing to everyone”

The first phase of Whiteburn’s Viewforth, Kirkcaldy, was awarded Development of the Year – Small. This brownfield site sees the transformation of this former school site into new private and affordable housing. The Whiteburn team designed new home styles for this site and carefully selected materials across all homes to ensure it will be tenure blind.

The Homes for Scotland Awards 2024 presentation

The design was led by Roger Bainbridge, Director of Design and Delivery: “We have worked on the Viewforth site for over 4 years, 3 of which were planning and technical consents. Our first home owners were living on the site within a year of us starting our build. To win this award for the site goes some way to recognise all of the hard work and effort our professional team has done for us to be at this stage. The judge’s feedback on the design of our homes and the quality of the place we are creating reinforces the positive contribution SMEs such as Whiteburn can make when delivering new homes. The challenges of brownfield sites need to be understood, however, by Local Authorities and other stakeholders. There needs to be a willingness to see the bigger picture of housing delivery, regeneration, and wider benefits as opposed to entrenched individual policy positions.”

Whiteburn was also awarded SME Home Builder of the Year for the second time in three years. Whiteburn has been operational since 1992, but the management team changed the business focus to house building in 2018. Director of Construction Charlie Bain adds: “When I joined Whiteburn, it was our ambition to become the best SME house builder in Scotland. To have achieved this recognition in 2022 from our peers and again in 2024 is just brilliant.  It is all credit to our site teams and the subcontractors and suppliers we work with. In the past 5 years, we’ve set up our construction teams from scratch. We brought with us our industry expertise, but also challenged ourselves to look outside our industry and try new ideas such that we create a culture and workplace of excellence, respect and care. As ever, we continually face challenges, but at Whiteburn, our culture is to support each other in resolving them.”

Homes for Scotland’s Award of People, Place, Planet was awarded to both finalists, CCG Scotland and Whiteburn Projects. A little bit of the David and the Goliath from Whiteburn’s perspective, but the dual award shows the size of your company doesn’t hinder you from setting a positive agenda of environmental, social, and governance structure.  Whiteburn’s Eve McCurrich adds: “Winning this award was close to my heart as it’s about the culture and agenda of our company. When I discussed the award with the team, many didn’t even consider what we do as ‘different’ so that’s the true sign of an embedded culture.”

Whiteburn’s Director of Sales, Toria Jones, says: “From the outset at Whiteburn, we consider the wider repercussions of the homes we build. From the sites we choose to how we design, through to the customer experience of buying a home from us and choosing their finishings to personalise their new home. Each purchaser is unique to us, and we work with them to support them from their first point of contact to the end of their post-completion 2 years. Customers invest in our homes and our company. We work with our buyers through a significant stage of change in their lives and see for ourselves how much people love what we do.”

For the team at Whiteburn it’s back to business as usual. Homes are available to buy on their award winning Viewforth, Kirkcaldy site and where in July the 15 affordable homes will be completed ahead of programme and handed to Kingdom Housing Association. At the Grange, Burntisland the final new homeowners are moving into their new homes. The team is aiming to commence two new sites in the Scottish Borders in 2024 in Lauder and Peebles. They are currently looking for new opportunities to work their magic.
