Whiteburn Portfolio: SoCo

Back in 2002 the largest fire in Edinburgh’s recent history devastated a multi-owned Old Town tenement block straddling South Bridge and Cowgate. Many well-known businesses and Fringe venues were made homeless.

Whiteburn painstakingly negotiated to consolidate the ownerships, buying in the 9 freehold interests making up the site, whilst testing the market for a hotel-led multi use development, to be constructed in the sensitive setting of Edinburgh’s Old and New Town UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Working with Allan Murray Architects, we evolved a mix use scheme which made links between South Bridge, Chambers Street and Cowgate, creating a new stepped courtyard, typical of traditional Old Town settings.

After extensive consultation with Historic Scotland, politicians and local interest groups, Whiteburn secured planning and listed buildings consent for a 228 bed hotel with retail and leisure space over 10 levels, before introducing development partner Jansons Properties, who secured the necessary investment to see the development carried out, with Whiteburn as Development Manager, including the reinstatement of the legendary La Belle Angelle.

What People Say About Us

I am so pleased with my apartment. From the moment I walked in it had the wow factor. My friends and family all comment on how modern and amazing it looks. I always look forward to getting home to seeing the grand entrance hall and settling down in my open plan living space, looking out my bay window.

Karen – Ashludie House

Friendly service with fantastic communication throughout. The finish quality is excellent and the aftercare service has been exceptional.

It has been a pleasure to work with Whiteburn, who have an obvious passion for not only creating beautiful places to live, but for also making a positive impact on the wider context in which they build. Their ambition to convert a much loved, but neglected Dundee landmark has brought a new lease of life to the building as well as the surrounding neighbourhood and their attention to detail and care for the end user has provided a valuable addition to Dundee’s housing stock.

Neil – Page / Park Architects – Architects for the Parkview Development, Dundee

We purchased a property from Whiteburn in February 2016. We were attracted to the site by the high quality of the work clearly visible when passing the site. The attention to the appearance of the completed areas of the site despite the ongoing work clearly showed an attention to detail sadly lacking on most developments. The property is well designed and offered a high specification apartment in a well planned environment. I have found Whiteburn to be a very professional organisation who have produced a high quality construction backed up by a very helpful, courteous Customer Care Staff.

Iain – Parkview, Dundee

The flat has exceeded expectations in terms of design, quality of fittings and particularly its outstanding vistas in all directions. It has genuinely earned a ‘wow’ response from all our visitors. The development is set in beautifully landscaped grounds and has excellent transport links with key resources within the city. Our contacts with the development company and the contractors at all levels have been both effective and cordial. We are happy to recommend Whiteburn.
